LONDON, July 31 — Eugene McCarthy declared support to day for an independent state of Bangla Desh and reproved the United States Government for being “unresponsive” to the urgency of the Pakistan crisis.
The former Senator from Minnesota made the statements at a news conference here at the end of a 10‐day European vacation. He said repressive measures in East Pakistan came “very close to genocide,” and it was “a pity” that the United States was still sending aid to West Pakistan.
Mr. McCarthy said the United States should grant recognition to Bangla Desh — meaning Bengal Nation — the regime established by the East Pakistani autonomy movement. He said he would actively support protest movements seeking that end when he returned to the United States.
