KARACHI, Pakistan, Aug. 7 —The Government of President Agha Mohammed Yahya Khan announced today that 88 members of the National Assembly belonging to the banned Awami League would retain their seats.
The league, led by Sheik Mujibur Rahman, won 167 out of the 313 assembly seats in last year's general elections. All Awami League candidates were elected from East Pakistan.
The party was banned by President Yahya in March after Pakistani troops moved against East Pakistan.
The 79 other assemblymen who are members of the Awami League will be given an opportunity to clear themselves of charges against them, the Government said.
According to reports in the Pakistani press, league members who retain their seats are likely to offer their cooperation to the Government, either forming a new political party or joining one of the existing ones.
The other major party in the Assembly is the left‐wing People's party, led by a former Foreign Minister, Zulfikar All Bhutto. This party won 88 national assembly seats, all of them from West Pakistan.
