To THE EDITOR:
Khushwant Singh's article about the East Pakistani refugees (“Why They Fled Pakistan — and Won't Go Back,” Aug. 1) reveals shocking truths. Mr. Singh correctly emphasizes the human side of the tragedy, even though he clearly understands its political and economic implications for his country.
Having recently visited India as head of an International Rescue Committee mission sent to investigate this largest refugee problem since World War II, I know how desperate is the need if millions of Bengalis are to survive. We and other voluntary agencies have initiated practical and immediate aid programs, many of which utilize the medical and educational skills of the refugees themselves. Such programs deserve the support of all compassionate persons every where.
