KARACHI, Pakistan, Oct. 10 —The military Government of President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan lifted its ban on political activity today in preparation for by‐elections in East Pakistan.
The ban was imposed in March, when the President ordered the army into East Pakistan to crush a movement for autonomy there.
The by‐elections will fill more than 70 seats in the National Assembly and more than 100 :n the East Pakistan Provincial Assembly that are vacant because of the “disqualification” of members of the outlawed Awami League, led by Sheik Mujibur Rahman.
Almost all the political parties plan to nominate candidates for the by‐elections to he held in December and January.
Under regulations announced today, the parties will be able to hold public meetings and processions but will have to give “reasonable notice” to local officials “to avoid any clash of program and consequent inconvenience to different parties.”
