NEW DELHI, Nov. 1—A Defense Ministry spokesman said today that Indian border forces had taken “counteraction” against Pakistani forces for the first time in their border confrontations.
The spokesman said that the Indians acted yesterday and to day in retaliation against 11 straight days of Pakistani shelling, mostly with mortars, of Kamalpur, a border town, in Tripura State, northeastern India.
The spokesman said the “counteraction” silenced the Pakistani guns, which had caused many civilian casualties and widespread damage to buildings. While he declined to specify the nature or scope of the Indian action, he called it “the first of its type.”
The Government announced here tonight that the local government in Tripura had been suspended and the territory placed under direct central rule.
A Cabinet committee was reported to have decided on that move to give the New Delhi Government tighter control over the territory which borders East Pakistan.
