WASHINGTON, Nov. 9—The International Longshoremen's Association was reported today to be holding up the loading of 657,000 blankets bound for East Pakistani refugees in India.
Efforts to reach Thomas Gleason, the union's president, or other union officials were unavailing. However, there were indications that the union's strike committee, which is directing a stoppage at all East Coast and Gulf Coast ports, might make an announcement about the blankets by tomorrow.
According to informants here, the American Export Lines vessel, Export Adventurer, chartered by the Government to transport the blankets to India, has been unable to enter the port of Charleston, S.C. The union local there will not assure the port authorities that the ship will be allowed to load and sail, the informants said.
The cotton‐synthetic blankets, worth $1.3‐million, are at the Charleston docks in special plywood containers that can be reused as shelters for refuges.
