Mujib 'Feeble,' Bengali Aide Says Here
By RALPH BLUMENTHAL
A visiting representative of the Pakistani secessionist regime has reported that Sheik Mujibur Rahman, the jailed East Pakistani leader, was seen about four weeks ago, "listless and feeble." in a prison courtroom in Lyallpur, West Pakistan.
The report, according to the representative, is the latest information that officials of Bangla Desh—or Bengali Nation, as the secessionists call their region—have about the condition of the popular Bengali leader, and the place where he is being held.
Sheik Mujib won a commanding majority in the election for a National Assembly last year and was arrested March 26 in the army crackdown on the separatist Eastern province.
The envoy, Rehman Sobhan, former economic adviser to Sheik Mujib, said in an interview here that the report had come from an East Pakistani sent to Lyallpur, west of Lahore, to testify against the leader. Since then, he added, there has been no news and for all that any Bangla Desh official' knows, Sheik Mujib could be dead.
The West Pakistan - based' Government of President Agha Mohammad Yahya Khan announced in August that Sheik Mujib had been put on trial for "waging war against Pakistan,", among other charges. However,' neither the place of the trial nor its proceedings and out-, come have ever been announced. The Government did say it had provided Sheik Mujib with a defense lawyer.
Mr. Sobhan, a 36-year-old Bengali, travels from a base in Oxford, England, to Western European capitals and Washington and New York to lobby against further aid to Pakistan. He reported some resentment by Bangla Desh leaders against United States diplomatic efforts to seek a compromise between the two Pakistani sides.
He said that the rebel mission in Calcutta, India. had been warned recently by the leader ship against contacts with Americans who were said to be seeking to split the independence movement through elements willing to compromise on a complete breakaway from West Pakistan.
Asked about the allegations, United States Government sources confirmed reports that the United States had approached both sides. However, it was stated that no United States mediation had taken place and that no mediation was likely in the near future.
