NEW DELHI, Dec. 5—A Defense Ministry spokesman said tonight that the Indian ‐Army was conforming to the Geneva conventions in the treatment of Pakistani prisoners.
The spokesman said a Pakistani Army garrison surrendered at Kamalpur in the Mymensingh District of East Pakistan last night. He said that Gen. S.H.F.J. Manekshaw, chief of the Indian Army staff, had instructed the local commander that Capt. Ahsan Mallik and his men should be treated with “courtesy and chivalry.”
The spokesman said that the garrison had been surrounded by Indian troops, and that Captain Mallik had been given six hours to get instructions from the Pakistani high command on whether to surrender. The spokesman said that the instructions had been “to die fighting,” but that Captain Mallik had been persuaded by his men to surrender.
GENEVA, Dec. 5—The International Committee of the Red Cross today called on India and Pakistan to comply with the Geneva conventions.
