Background: Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the powerful leader of East Pakistan's Awami League which has been calling for autonomy of the Bengal states, was today (Friday, March 26) accused by Pakistan's President Yayha Khan of being a traitor. The accusation came after yesterday's call for a general strike by the Sheikh, in protest against Army shootings in East Pakistan in which 35 people are reported to have died and more than 100 injured.

Sheikh Mujibur is not new to political trouble and controversy. He entered politics as a student leader, and has been prominent in the Awami League's fight for autonomy since 1966. In the past five years Sheikh Mujibur has been in jail six times for his secessionist activities, but he is still considered by many as the only man who could keep a moderate hold on the Eastern part of the country which is already in the throngs of civil war.
