Background: There's no sign in the western wind of Pakistan of the crisis situation in the East that has threatened to bring civil war to the country. While the army is reported to have taken control of the Bengalis in East Pakistan, the predominantly Punjabi population of Karachi and the East pray as normal and bathe in the sun. Newspapers proclaim the secessionist leader of the Awami League of East Pakistan, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who won a majority in last December's General Election, to be an enemy of the country.

London VISNEWS cameraman Bill MacConville was flown to Karachi to film this story while other VISNEWS camera crews were caught by the news embargo in the Eastern wing.

SYNOPSIS: The Jinnah mausoleum in Karachi. While in the Eastern wing of Pakistan the army has been ordered to crush the free Bengali movement led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, there' o sign of any crisis in the West. Here, 1,000 miles away, the people carry out their ritual prayers and offer thanks to the Almighty. Their' is a comparatively prosperous existence...especially compared to the East.

One of the main complaints of the Bengali population of Est Pakistan has been that in spite of having a larger population than the East, they do not have the amenities that Karachi has, and that their people have a standard of living far inferior to those here. This bitterness gave the leader of the secessionist Awami League, Sheikh Mujib, great support in East Pakistan. But not in the West. President Yahya Khan acted strongly.

It's reported that the army now has control of the East.Here in Karachi the people are so confident that their which for peace and quiet has been answered that there's almost a holiday atmosphere. Families descend on the beaches, play games and bathe in the sun. But in the eastern wing of their country, it's reported that as many as 10,000 people have been killed and the university in Dacca has been shelled, killing 200 students. It's still not sure exactly what is happening. All news is still heavily censored. the Pakistan government has claimed that complete calm reigns in the East, as well as here.

The sun beats down on the carefree people of Karachi...and in East Pakistan the heavy hand of President Yahya beats down on the Awami League...membership of the party has been made illegal...their loader, Shiekh Mujib, is reported to be under arrest...and the party's offices in Dacca have been taken over by police.
