Background: The British ship Clan MacNair arrived in Calcutta yesterday (Tuesday) carrying 119 people of 17 nationalities evacuated from East Pakistan via the port of Chittagong.
Among the evacuees were 37 United States citizens, 33 Britons, eight Canadians, seven Germans, seven Yugoslavs, six Danes, three French, three New Zealanders and one Australian.
The refugees later gave harrowing first-hand accounts of the bloodshed in East Pakistan.
Also berthed in Calcutta is the British freighter Thomas Everett with 1,600 tons of cargo for Chittagong. Calcutta shipping sources say over 25,000 tons of cargo is held in various ships, some of them in Chittagong, unable to unload because of the East Pakistan situation.
