Background: The Indian Government has granted political asylum to eight East Pakistanis who deserted from the Pakistan submarine "Mangro". The submarine was recently purchased from the French Government and is anchored in Toulon. The Pakistanis, a Petty Officer and seven ratings, said they were the only Easterns out of a crew of 45 and since the civil war, tension aboard the submarine had become "unbearable". The eight men deserted and travelled to Madrid where the Indian representative arranged their asylum. The deserters flew from Rome today for New Delhi.
