Dacca, July 2.—Two British tea planters have flown north to Sylhet. near the Indian border, to resume work on estates semi-deserted since two of their colleagues vanished last month. Two more planters plan to fly out there today.
Planters who wish to return to estates will be concentrated in a well guarded central area some distance from the Indian border, which is believed to be used as a sanctuary by Mukli Fauj raiders of the Bangla Desh Liberation Forces. The planters will be based near Srimangal. where so far damage to bungalows and installations has been slight.
A spokesman for the British High Commission said: “We have been in contact with the planters and believe they recognize the element of risk.“
One planter who recently flew back to Dacca from Australia hoping to resume work, has resigned rather than return in the present situation.
Mukti Fauj fighters are believed to regard the activation of the tea estates as a move to boost East Pakistan’s economy and they may make the planters one of their targets.—Reuter.
Calcutta. July 2.—Refugees are still flooding across the border from East Pakistan into the Bongaon district of West Bengal, officials said today. Cholera broke out among the refugees there with 500 cases reported in one day alone earlier this week.
The number of refugees now in West Bengal was 5,027,755, a rise of about 250,000 over last week, the officials said, but large numbers of refugees had still to be counted, especially in the Bongaon area where 300,000 East Pakistanis had crossed in the past four days.
Virtually all the present refugees were coming from the Faridpur district in the interior of East Pakistan.
Of the five million refugees, some 3,331,771 were registered in camps, and the others were living with friends and relations in the state.
But this left out large numbers seeking shelter along the roadsides, the officials added. Mr B. B. Mandal, the state Director for Refugee Relief and Rehabilitation, said there might be as many as five and a half million refugees in all in West Bengal.'—Reuter.
