Eugene McCarthy, the former United Stares senator who is in England visiting his friend, Robert Lowell, will today publicly announce his support for an independent state of Bangla Desh. It will be the first time he has spoken out on an issue which, he feels, has so far “not really involved people in the States.”
McCarthy was asked by Action Bangla Desh whether he would address their rally in Trafalgar Square tomorrow afternoon. He was unable to attend the rally as he is returning to America but offered to hold a press conference at the Dorchester this morning to expound his views.
“During the Nigeria civil war I supported the idea of an independent Biafra”, says McCarthy. “Geographically there is an even clearer case for an independent Bangla Desh.”
McCarthy believes that the Pakistan tragedy could even become, a minor issue in the next Presidential election campaign— and if McCarthy decides to seek the Democratic nomination he might use America's arm supplies to Pakistan as a stick to attack the Nixon administration. “It’s part of the pattern of American foreign policy. All too often support is given to military solutions. It is another example, although not as direct, of our involvement in Vietnam.”
