Karachi. Aug 12.-The Pakistan Government was still silent tonight on the trial of Shaikh Mujibur Rahman, the East Pakistan leader, which is believed to have been in progress for the past two days. He is accused of “waging war on Pakistan” and other offences.
There has been no official word about Shaikh Mujib since the announcement last Monday that he was to be tried in camera by a special military court sitting at an undisclosed place in West Pakistan. The trial would begin on August 11, it was stated.
The general feeling here is that the court will pass the death sentence on Shaikh Mujib. although President Yahya could still commute it.
Delhi.—Mrs Indira Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister, accused the United Nations of not doing enough over the trial of Shaikh Mujib. She was replying to members of the Upper House of Parliament who suggested that U Thant. the United Nations Secretary-General. should be asked to go to Pakistan.
Mrs Gandhi said she was prepared to consider asking U Thant to make a dash to Pakistan in a bid to save the life of Shaikh Mujib, but she did not know whether he would be willing to go “after the sort of statement” he had issued on Bangla Desh.
She assured members that her government was doing all possible to save the life of Shaikh Mujib. She had written to the heads of all friendly governments to persuade the Pakistan authorities not to proceed with the trial or harm him.
