Teheran, Sept 14
President Yahya of Pakistan arrived here today for his first visit abroad since the fighting began in East Bengal in March.
He went directly from the airport to the Palace for talks with the Shah without making any statement to the press. He is to leave tomorrow morning.
It is not clear why he has chosen to leave his country for such a hurried visit at a time when he is under heavy political pressure at home. The scant information emanating from official sources suggests that he may be seeking the Shah's diplomatic support. The Shah certainly has an interest in the stability of neighbouring Pakistan which, like Iran, is a Muslim but non-Arab country.
There is no confirmation here of rumours that Teheran is being used as a launching pad for attempts to encourage a dialogue between India and Pakistan. The Presidents of both India and Pakistan will be in Iran next month for celebrations marking the 2,500th anniversary of the Persian monarchy.
