Teheran, Sept 15
Iran today affirmed its support for Pakistan for the first time since the events in East Bengal in March.
A joint communiqué issued after the talks between the Shah and President Yahya Khan of Pakistan said that the Shah “expressed Iran's solidarity with Pakistan” and that the two countries would continue to support each other in matters of common interest.
The communiqué made no mention of developments in Pakistan but said that the talks had included bilateral matters and regional and international affairs. It is inconceivable, however, that President Yahya would have undertaken such a hurried visit, his first abroad since March, at a time of acute political difficulties unless his purpose was connected with the internal situation in Pakistan.
In April the Iranian Government described the events in Pakistan as the country’s internal affairs and called on other nations not to interfere. The two stales have consistently pledged mutual support, and both are members of the Central Treaty Organization and Regional Cooperation for Development.
President Yahya. who was accompanied by his Foreign Minister, left Teheran this morning. Official sources said that discussions were necessary before the General Assembly met, which suggests that Pakistan will have Iranian backing at the United Nations. It is possible also that Iran may help Pakistan with military spare parts, although the scale is not likely to be large.
