Heavy fighting was reported in East Pakistan yesterday, with troops from West Pakistan said to have begun an offensive against independence forces.
For the second day the Pakistani Government said it was using warplanes against what it called “miscreants” and “armed infiltrators.” At the same time official radio and press announcements said that life was returning to normal in various ways in East Pakistan.
Indian press reports said, meanwhile, that Pakistani troops had begun a three‐pronged offensive against independence forces holding much of the western part of East Pakistan.
The Associated Press reported from the same general area that in numerous villages and cities in the western half of East Pakistan, the East Pakistanis were ruling themselves, with administrators representing the independence movement running the local railway, police and postal service as well as the government.
