NEW DELHI, April 23 (UPI) —The Bengali independence movement appealed to the United States and China today to recognize it as the rightful government of East Pakistan. The appeal came from Maulana Abdul Bhashani, a leader in the Awami League, the Bengali political party that held a majority in Pakistan's National Assembly before President Agha Mohammed Yahya Khan declared it illegal at the start of the civil war on March 25. Mr. Bhashani's messages to President Nixon and Chairman Mao Tse‐tung and Premier Chou En‐lai were read to a gathering of newsmen in Calcutta by Shakil Ahmed, a representative of the league. Mr. Bhashani asked the American and Chinese leaders to do all in their power to stop President Yahya from using weapons supplied by the United States and China against East Pakistan's population of 75 mil lion. His message to Mr. Nixon said that, with weapons sup plied by “yours and the Government of China, barbarous soldiers of West Pakistan have brutally slaughtered hundreds of thousands of innocent and unarmed, helpless masses of Bangla Desh, irrespective of caste, creed and sex, including women, children and even new born babies in the arms of their mothers.” Bangla Desh is Bengali for Bengal Nation.
