CALCUTTA, India, June 5 (Reuters)—The death toll in cholera epidemic sweeping through four million Pakistani refugees in India's West Bengal State has reached 8,000, diplomatic sources said here today.
Health Ministry officials in New Delhi said the toll could be as high as that, but no precise statistics were available.
With a catastrophe on its hands, the Indian Government continued its efforts to recruit international help and also to reassure the West Bengal government that it would not be left alone to face the problem.
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi visited West Bengal today for talks with the state government and said that the central Government in New Delhi had taken full responsibility for the care of refugees, who have fled from East Pakistan since the army began the attempt to crush the secessionist movement there.
