RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, Dec. 14 (Reuters)—A Pakistani military spokesman reported fierce fighting today between Pakistani force and an Indian paratroop brigade dropped north of Dacca.
The spokesman said that the Indians had been unable to make any headway.
He also reported house‐to-house fighting in Khulna, in the south of East Pakistan, and in areas around it. Civilians were taking part in the street fighting, he said.
Giving a general summary. the spokesman said that Pakistani troops in the East were regrouping and confronting the attacking Indian forces with cohesive defenses. He added that the Pakistan Army could hold out indefinitely in the East without reinforcements or further supplies.
He said that Pakistan defenders in the East were determined to fight on indefinitely, having made adequate arrangements for logistics and provision of food and clothing.
The spokesman accused the Indians of “resorting to indiscriminate bombing of the civilian population and localities, not sparing even hospitals.”
He said that hospitals in Dacca and Comilla were attacked from the air despite clear Red Cross markings. [The Pakistani radio, monitored in London, said there were heavy casualties when two hospitals in Sylhet and Comilla were hit by Indian artillery fire and air raids.]
